Some facts and myths about soap making:

If you have questions feel free to ask us on our contact page.

How is it made?

Soap is made by combining oils (fats), water and lye. When mixed together they go through saponification. The end result is soap!

Lye soap is Harsh...

This once might have been true. A long time ago Lye was made at home with various recipes, resulting in different consistencies with a variety of impurities. Modern processing removes these impurities creating a clean consistent product.

Even so, isn’t all that lye still harmful?

No. When soap is made properly all of the lye is transformed in the process.
Think of it this way, the formula for table salt is Sodium Chloride (Sodium and Chlorine). Both of these items on their own are dangerous, but when they are combined they are perfectly safe, soap is the same. When the oils are properly combined with the lye you get soap.

Why do you use Reverse Osmosis and not Distilled water?

Distilled water has a rating of 0 PPM (Parts Per Million), our source for reverse osmosis water (The Water Store Kingston) tests their water to a maximum of 1 PPM. This difference is so insignificant, it will not have any effect on the final product.
